The Pensacola, FL area combines seasonally warm temperatures with abundant recreational opportunities, so residents and visitors don't need to stay cooped up inside during the winter. Instead, you can get out and explore areas such as Naval Live Oaks Trails, which are part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Its beautiful natural setting has 7.5 miles of hiking trails with a background of the Santa Rosa Sound.

Our real estate agents suggest getting out and about this winter to explore the following Naval Live Oaks Trails:

Take Time to Explore the Naval Live Oaks Trails

Address: 1801 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Gulf Breeze, FL 32561

Beaver Pond Trail

If you're looking for a short route or one that you can combine with other trails, try the Beaver Pond Trail. The 1.3-mile trail can be accessed from multiple access points on Reservation Road, and it also intersects with the following trails to extend your hike:

  • Old Borrow Pit
  • Brown's Pond
  • North South
  • Pine Scrub trails

If you're looking for a simple journey, take the route out and back in about one to two hours. At the northern end of the trail, a beaver dam is visible.

Andrew Jackson Trail

Andrew Jackson Trail, also known as the Pensacola-St. Augustine Road was the original site of the first Congress-funded road that connected East Florida with West Florida. Much of the trail is wide and sandy because Pensacola Bay is not far from it. After about 10 minutes on the trail, you'll see a dune—with, interestingly, orange-colored sand—that's covered in vegetation. If you take the trail out and back, you'll cover a distance of 4.8 miles in about 1.5-2.5 hours.

Brackenridge Nature Trail

For a short, easy trail with fantastic views, head to Brackenridge Nature Trail, a .3-mile loop trail found behind the Gulf Islands National Seashore Headquarters. The trailhead has a wooden deck and benches where you can see views of the Santa Rosa Sound and the Pensacola Bay Bridge. Along the loop, you'll pass through coastal forest and read signs that explain how the woodland meets the needs of the birds, reptiles, and mammals that live there.

Fishing Trail

The aptly named Fishing Trail, which runs the length of the Naval Live Oaks Area, has several points along the way where you can access the water to fish or launch a kayak. If you're going out and back, you'll travel 1.84 miles on a surface that's hard-packed and sandy, so it's easily navigated. As with most trails in the area, you'll be able to connect with other trails to make a longer trip.

Old Borrow Pit Trailhead

The Old Borrow Pit Trailhead starts at a trailhead behind a residential neighborhood and leads to Highway 98, which was constructed using sand from the borrow pit. The trail is sandy, and if you're going on a sunny day, you'll have some additional warmth since it doesn't have much shade. A round trip is 1.8 miles long, but you can access the following trails to extend your hike:

  • Old Quarry
  • Beaver Pond
  • Andrew Jackson
